Even though Satellite Television has been available for many years now, it has not gained the same level of popularity and widespread acceptance as cable television. This may be because not everyone knows the advantages and disadvantages of having a Satellite TV setup and subscription.
Some people still associate Satellite TV with complicated setups, including the (in)famous large satellite dish. Nowadays, companies like DirecTV and Dish Network offer compact systems that are easy to install, with no loss of quality in signal and reception.
For Satellite TV, here is a list of the advantages and disadvantages.
The Advantages:
• Satellite TV offers a bigger channel lineup versus regular cable service. Basic satellite subscription packages include a greater variety of channels and provide more value for money, versus your basic cable TV subscription.
• You are guaranteed superior picture quality. Satellite TV is based on a 100% digital signal and has HD programming broadcast at 1080p, the highest resolution currently available for television.
• One subscription and one set top box can provide for multiple television sets in the home, unlike cable companies that may charge more for each extra television set connected to their service.
• As long as your dish is directed to the proper coordinates, your location and its distance to the cable company are irrelevant to the quality of your signal.
• You can still use an over the air antenna for local channels vis-à-vis your satellite set top box.
The Disadvantages:
• Local channels may not be available, unlike cable TV subscriptions which require them to be part of their lineup. However, as mentioned above, you can still use a regular or external antenna to get local channels.
• Your reception may be affected if you live in an area where tall trees, mountains or other terrain features do not allow your dish to lock on to a signal.
• Hard rain or extreme winds may also affect the reception of your satellite dish. This is not a common problem, especially in places with mild weather.
• Since satellite TV is usually provided by smaller contractors, the level of personalized service may not be as good as your local cable company, which usually has a nearby office.
Before making the decision to take a satellite TV subscription, take note of these factors. Different types of television service cater to different people, different needs and different situations.
